Discover Whyalla’s rich maritime history by visiting the HMAS Whyalla, a former warship built during World War II. It is now the centrepiece of the Whyalla Maritime Museum, where you can tour the historic ship, exploring the living quarters, war rooms, artillery weapons and galley. Duck into the adjoining museum to see the history of HMAS Whyalla in World War II, intrepid explorer Matthew Flinders’ journals and natural history exhibits.

Are you hunting for some memorable views? Venture up Hummock Hill Lookout to wander a peaceful walking trail and soak up panoramic views of Spencer Gulf. The nearby Ada Ryan Gardens is perfect for an afternoon picnic, thanks to its lush native plants, shaded grassy spaces and children’s play area.

If you love wildlife, head down to Whyalla Marina to spot dolphins frolicking in the waters or don some snorkelling gear to see the rare Australian giant cuttlefish during their annual migration through Spencer Gulf. Whyalla Conservation Park is home to over 80 species of birds, while the surrounding countryside reveals red and grey kangaroos and over 20 reptiles.

Whether you want to fish from the beach, off the rocks or out in the deep blue from a hired boat, Whyalla can accommodate. Point Lowly is perfect for catching rare kingfish, while Spencer Gulf has garfish, snook, snapper and whiting. If you prefer to stay on land, walk or cycle the Wetlands Walk Trail or Freycinet Trail to see untouched nature.

Getting around

Whyalla Airport is 7.5 kilometres from the town centre and has regular flights from Adelaide. You can easily walk around town, but will need your own vehicle to venture further afield.
