A small town surrounded by lakes and canals, Varkaus is popular with nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Located on the straits between two sections of Lake Saimaa, Varkaus is home to Kamari Island and the Ammakoski Rapids, both of which are ideal for fishing and nature exploration.

To gain insight into local culture, visit the Museum of Mechanical Music, one of the most unique museums in Finland. This museum contains the biggest collection of mechanical musical instruments in all of the Nordic regions, including the world’s largest orchestrion and Amadeus Street organ.

For stunning city views, head up to the Varkaus Water Tower Terrace. Have a drink at the top of the observation deck, sit back and relax in the sun chairs and soak up the natural surroundings and beautiful lake below.

Outdoor enthusiasts will want to spend time out on Lake Saimaa. Join a guided sightseeing tour, embark on a fishing expedition and stay until dusk to watch the sun set over the water.

Be sure to check out Kamari Island, an exquisite green area with three kilometers of nature trails. Go for a hike, take a canoe out on the water or travel further to the bird-watching towers in Lake Ruokojarvi and Lake Mula to observe Eurasian bittern and the Western marsh harrier.

Getting around

The nearest major airport to Varkaus is Kuopio Airport, located less than 100 kilometers away. Taxis and cars are the most common forms of transit around the city, but you can also explore on foot. Local buses can also connect you to nearby cities.
