With no less than 40 churches in town, a visit to Mirozhsky Monastery is a must-do while in Pskov. Dating back to the 12th century, the highlight of the monastery is the UNESCO heritage-listed Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour. You can admire the cathedral’s Byzantine-style frescoes, which represent one of the most comprehensive biblical narratives from the pre-Mongol era.

Explore the artifacts at Pskov National Museum of History, Architecture & Art. Set within the Pogankin Chambers, this 17th-century merchant’s house features pottery, silver, weaving and weapons, including a 15th-century Prince’s sword, as well as impressive paintings by prominent 18th and 20th-century Russian artists.

Experience the city’s glorious past at the Pskov Kremlin. Towering over the Velikaya River, the medieval citadel once consisted of five giant fortified walls, 37 towers and 14 gates. Imagine the epic battles waged here as you walk along the preserved stone ramparts and climb the Vlasievskaya tower for panoramic views over the Kremlin.

At the center of the Kremlin's mighty walls lies the whitewashed Trinity Cathedral. The 17th-century cathedral stands at 72 meters high and is crowned with a glimmering gold dome. Venture inside to see a collection of bejeweled icons of the Madonna.


Getting around

Pskov Airport is six kilometers from Pskov, with taxis available to take you into town. Regular buses and trains arrive from most major Russian cities. Once in Pskov, walking and cycling are the most common ways to explore.
