Where to stay in Kirishima

About Kirishima

Nature enthusiasts flock to Kirishima, as it is surrounded by mountains, water and trees. Defined by its volcanoes, Shinto shrines and natural hot springs, you might recognise its scenic beauty from the James Bond film “You Only Live Twice”, but the city offers far more than just the backdrop to a spy movie.

Things to do

The spiritual heart of Kirishima is the Kirishima-Jingū. The facade here is beautifully carved and painted, dedicated to the god Ninigi no Mikoto. There has been a succession of shrines on this site, but the earlier structures were destroyed by volcanic eruptions. Registered as an Important Cultural Property, the current building dates back to 1715.

With its unique geology, visitors will find enticing hot springs all around Kirishima. Just outside the city, you’ll find Kirishima Onsen, home to dozens of sulphuric springs. It’s here that you can choose between inside and outside baths, in contemporary or traditional styles. The slightly radioactive mud is said to have health-giving properties, leaving your skin feeling wonderfully soft.

Surrounding Kirishima is the mountainous Kirishima National Park. The landscapes are breathtakingly beautiful, though its active volcanoes mean you can’t always get close to the craters. The hiking trails are open from spring until autumn, where you can follow the 6-hour Kirishima Ridge Trail across the whole mountain chain.

Getting around

There is a public bus network in and around Kirishima, which links locations such as the airport, railway station and Kirishima-Jingū shrine. There are regular buses between the centre of the city and Kirishima Onsen, but if you intend to explore the national park, it is better to hire a car.
