Where to stay near Kaohsiung City Centre

About Kaohsiung City Centre

Located on the south-west coast of Taiwan, Kaohsiung City Centre is the main commercial, financial and transport hub of this sprawling port city. It’s a carefully planned, modern Asian metropolis, with leafy green spaces and recreational areas that make it one of the country’s most pleasant cities to explore.

The 85 Sky Tower dominates Kaohsiung’s skyline, rising to a staggering 347.5 metres, and just a short distance from Taiwan’s largest shopping centre at the Dream Mall. A ferry ride whisks visitors across Kaohsiung Harbour to the bustling Cijin district which is filled with restaurants serving up freshly caught seafood and Taiwanese snacks. A picturesque coastal park and beach are also situated here, together with the centuries-old Thean Hou Temple which is dedicated to the Goddess of Sailors and protects fishermen as they head out to sea. The Cihou Fort dominates the island’s northern tip, built in the 18th century to protect the harbour, together with the Cihou Lighthouse, built during the Ching dynasty and later remodelled into a Baroque-style by the Japanese. The British Consulate at Takow lies across the water and offers magnificent views across the city, together with the Pier 2 Art District, set across a former train station and shipping pier. Old locomotives stand alongside wall murals and a huge bumblebee statue, while two halls showcase changing exhibitions. The Love River cuts through the heart of Kaohsiung City Centre and past 228 Memorial Peace Park and Kaohsiung Museum of History, while its Liuhe and Ruifeng night markets are renowned for their street food, handicrafts and souvenirs.

Kaohsiung International Airport has flight connections across Asia, while regular high-speed trains depart from Kaohsiung Station to Taipei. The subway whisks passengers across the city on different lines with buses bridging network gaps, and public bike rental services are available across the city centre.

Kaohsiung was developed into a port town under Dutch Rule during the early 17th century, around what was then a small fishing village named Takao. In 1684, Taiwan was annexed by the Qing dynasty before being ceded to Japan in 1895, whose development of Kaohsiung’s harbour served as the foundation for the thriving port city seen today.
