Surrounded by forested mountains, Jiangmen is a bustling city filled with historic architecture, UNESCO-listed gardens, local museums and inviting Cantonese restaurants. Jiangmen also offers easy access to one of China's most beautiful national forest parks.

Things to do

Stroll along Changdi Street to discover Jiangmen's centuries-old past. Also known as “Little Canton”, the district is filled with historic architecture and elegant arcaded buildings. Today they house restaurants, clothing stores and Chinese medicine shops. Nearby, the waterfront promenade is a great place to watch dragon boats cruise along the river.

The Wuyi Huaqiao Museum showcases more than 35,000 artefacts, such as farming tools, pottery and musical instruments. There's a big focus on international immigration, with exhibitions spotlighting the role Chinese immigrants played in building North American railroads.

Built in 1926, the 11,000-square-metre Li Garden of Kaiping houses beautifully trimmed bonsai trees, emerald ponds and traditional Chinese pagodas. A network of winding canals and ornate bridges connect different parts of the garden.

Venture outside the city to explore the lush maple forests and lofty peaks of Jiangmen Guifeng Mountain National Forest Park. The park is especially beautiful in autumn when the maple trees explode in a sea of reds, yellows and golds. Don't miss Yutai Temple, a historic place of worship that’s been welcoming worshippers since the Han dynasty.

Getting around

Parts of Jiangmen, including Changdi Street and the riverfront district, are easy to get around on foot. The city is also serviced by local buses and taxis. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is a two-hour train ride from Jiangmen.
