Where to stay in Halle

About Halle

A distinctively Saxon atmosphere defines the small German city of Halle. Majestic spires hang over a church square of statues and fountains, art galleries and bakeries impress boutique tastes, and the architecture of Eastern Germany defines many of the streets. Saxony-Anhalt is a proudly unique region, and Halle is its capital exuding both a history and modern ambience. Halle is also the gateway city to a region that has more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any other in Germany.

Martin Luther’s history flutters across Saxony-Anhalt and fills Marktkirche Unser Lieben Frauen, an impressive church where the protestant figure preached. His death mask can be found here and is Halle’s most iconic attraction. Handel was baptised in this church, and the nearby Handel-Haus Halle offers a detailed narrative of his life and music. Two contrasting castles also make up the classic Halle experience. Old fortress rooms have been converted to galleries at Kunstmuseum Moritzburg, while Burg Giebichenstein offers unending city views. Many visitors also spend time in Neustadt, an area of quintessential architecture from communist East Germany.

One way of getting around Halle is to cruise along the river, taking in the local atmosphere and attractions. A tram system connects most of the city, and most lines connect at the central Marktplatz. 30 kilometres from Halle, Leipzig-Halle Airport is on the high-speed train line and is the second largest airport in eastern Germany.

The pulpit from which Luther preached is a majestic work of art, expertly carved as a symbol of the German Renaissance movement. Its unmistakable lines are a contrast to Luther’s death mask, which has seen many modifications during a chequered history.
