Fort Benning is one of the most prestigious military academies in the United States and supports over 120,000 active-duty soldiers, as well as family members and civilian employees. It was named after Henry L. Benning, a respected general in the Confederate States Army.
The 70,000-hectare complex is essentially a mini city with seven schools, fire and police departments and a shopping mall. Swimming pools and a skate park keep kids entertained, while teens can take part in youth activities.
As you explore Fort Benning you may recognise it from Hollywood blockbusters, such as “We Were Soldiers”, “Black Hawk Down” and “The General's Daughter”. Once a month the fort runs public training sessions and firepower demonstrations that offer a unique chance to see some of the U.S. Army's most powerful weapons. Fort Benning also puts you close to local attractions, such as the Florida Gulf Shores and Blue Ridge Mountains.
Fort Benning is set on the Alabama-Georgia border, a 20-minute drive from the Columbus city centre and two hours from Atlanta. Parking is available at the fort, though you'll need a visitor pass. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International is a two-hour drive north.
