Where to stay in Evenes

About Evenes

Evenes combines beautiful coastal landscapes with centuries of history, culture and tradition. Learn about the indigenous Sami people at one of the best open-air museums in Norway, then head to the mountains to explore a network of marble and limestone caves.

Things to do

The small village of Evenes is a great base for exploring the region. It’s set on the shores of Ofotfjorden and offers an excellent selection of cosy cafes, restaurants and B&Bs. Historic Evenes Church dates back to the 1800s and welcomes you with a charming white wooden façade. Perched on a rocky peninsula, Stone House is a modern addition to the coastline. Built from granite, it was designed by Norwegian artist Bjørn Nørgaard and draws on design elements from traditional Norwegian stave churches and ancient temples.

Visit the Várdobáiki Sami Centre to find out more about the region’s indigenous population. Exhibits spotlight the Sami people and include colourful costumes, hand-carved knives and lassos used to catch reindeer. The excellent Gállogieddi Open Air Sami Museum is another great introduction to local cultures and traditions.

The Trollkirka cave system is one of the longest in Norway and will enchant you with its subterranean rivers and waterfalls. An easy-to-follow trail leads you into the biggest cave, which stretches for 70 metres into the mountainside. After exploring the beautiful marble and limestone caverns, enjoy a refreshing dip in nearby Trollvatnet Lake. An extensive network of well-marked trails makes Evenes a prime hiking destination. Some trails wind through lush coastal forests and others take you to abandoned World War II strongholds.

Getting around

Evenes is located in Nordland county, a four-hour drive from Tromsø and 5.5 hours from Bodo. Rental cars are the best way to explore the region at your own pace. Bergen Airport is a 5.5-hour drive south and Harstad/Narvik Airport is a 10-minute drive from Evenes.
