Things to do

Start your exploration of Dongguan at the Opium War Museum. Browse the fascinating exhibits, such as the “Display of Opium Prohibition and History of the Opium War”, and gain insight into life in Southern China during the 18th and 19th centuries.

For some of the best views of the city, visit Qifeng Park and hike the paved paths past tranquil lakes to reach Huangqi Temple and its bird’s-eye views of Dongguan. You can also spend a day hiking the magnificent Dongwan Guanyin Mountain, which is dotted with historic temples and boasts a large Buddha statue at its summit.

Travelling with the kids? Visit the colourful Keyuan Gardens, where you’ll find scenic paths and shaded pavilions. One of the four most-famous classic-style gardens in Guangdong, this flourishing sanctuary dates back to the Qing dynasty.

You can’t leave without trying the city’s local delicacies at one of the hawker stalls, alley barbecues and sit-down restaurants. When the sun goes down, sample some of the city’s nightlife on Houjie Bar Street. Dine on traditional hot pot at The Little Sheep, then visit Irene’s Bar for a range of beers on tap.

Getting around

The best way to get around Dongguan is by taxi. Guangzhou-Baiyun Airport is just over an hour from the city centre, while Guangzhou South Station can be reached on a high-speed train and buses travel to Hong Kong in around two hours.
