You’ll quickly realise why so many locals love Cox’s Bazar once you see the picturesque beach area. This idyllic coast has forested hills along its length and is the perfect spot to find some colourful conch shells. There’s ample room for privacy, whether you’re swimming, sunbathing or cuddling with that special someone. Perfect for a day of romance, stick around for fiery sunsets over the calm water.

Combine the beach lifestyle with shopping at the town’s local markets, where you can find souvenirs ranging from conch-shell jewellery to handmade cigars and clothes. Culture vultures will also enjoy a visit to Aggmeda Khyang Monastery, a Buddhist monastery with religious manuscripts and images and a prayer chamber.

For more Buddhist culture, take the 16-kilometre drive out to Ramu, a fascinating village with monasteries, pagodas, golden Buddhas and a riverside temple with a giant bronze Buddha statue. Looking for an exciting road trip? Head about eight kilometres south of town to Himchari Waterfall, which is a spectacular natural sight during the wet season.

A longer drive will get you to Dulhazra Safari Park, about 50 kilometres from Cox’s Bazar. This wildlife reserve holds about 165 species of animals, from spotted deer and saltwater crocodiles to pythons and emus.

Getting around

Cox’s Bazar is best reached by plane, while those who prefer to travel by land are looking at a train to Chittagong and then a bus or car the rest of the way. Once there, you can walk to most places or use taxis or hire cars for journeys out of town.
