About Colchester, VT

Sprawling across the shores of Malletts Bay, Colchester is a small town on the edge of bustling Burlington. It was chartered as a town in 1763 and previously incorporated Winooski Falls before the separate city of Winooski was created in 1922. Colchester shares its border with New York state in the middle of Lake Champlain.

Things to do in Colchester

In the heart of town is the United Church of Colchester, a red-brick building topped by a soaring white steeple where Sunday services are held. Nearby is Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and Village Park, where you’ll find a wooded loop trail. After your walk, you can treat yourself to an ice cream from the Village Scoop, which is located directly across the road.

Hugging the north side of Malletts Bay is Niquette Bay State Park, which is a popular destination for swimming, wildlife watching and fishing. During the 19th century, the area was predominantly farmland and has since been reforested. You can soak up the sweeping views across Lake Champlain from one of the hiking routes or explore on two wheels along the Allen Trail.

At the western tip of Colchester is Causeway Park, which comprises a six-kilometre-long trail that extends into the waters of Lake Champlain. Both walkers and cyclists are permitted on the trail, with magnificent views toward Grand Isle on offer. Combine your visit with a stop at Airport Park, where you’ll find a children’s playground, picnic tables and a variety of sporting facilities.
